For those of you that don’t know us, introductions are probably in order. We are Jason and Jenny Dalgliesh. We have been married for 20 years and have 4 kids, Ben (25), Brooke (21), Sadie (19), and Sam (18.) We’ve lived in Ames, IA with our kids most of our lives searching for the “American Dream.” When we felt as though we had achieved it (you know..Nice jobs? Check! A couple of decent cars? Check!, Got the home with the picket fence, 2.5 kids, and a dogs? Check!) we found that our dream wasn’t really that at all. Our dream was a little different than what we’re constantly shown on T.V., the internet, and all the other subtle hints that we grew up around. Not that there is anything wrong with the “Dream” in the traditional sense, it just wasn’t for US. We were working lots of hours to make sure that we could pay for all of these things that we really didn’t care that much about and we hadn’t really considered an alternative. We have always been fascinated with U.S. travel, particularly road trips, and once we could afford it we managed to take the kids on some nice vacations for the last few years. Each time we would get a little crabbier or little more depressed when it was time for that drive home (imagine those car rides, I recall arguments and tears on a few of them) We stumbled across some websites a few years ago about people traveling, working, and living on the road full time! Once we started reading about the lifestyle we were hooked and knew that it was something that we at least wanted to try for a little while. We just didn’t know when or how. Then, over the last few years some things happened that reminded us that if we wanted to make a huge shift in our lifestyle and live the life WE imagined, there was no good reason to wait. Now that our kids are old enough to take care of themselves, we thought it was a good time to at least give this a try or we would forever wish we had and that wasn’t okay with us. So over the last few months we have been working on selling our home and getting rid of all of our stuff so we could buy an RV to live in. We are fortunate in that Jason is able to work remotely at Architectural Wall Systems, so we will have a steady source of income for as long as they will allow him to work. I plan on looking into some workamping, which is temporary employment that is geared toward people such as us who want to stay somewhere for just a couple months and move on. I may even try to sell some of the stuff I fiddle with to bring in a little extra money as well. Before we hit the road, we will be taking a 3 week long bike trip along the coast of Florida and we leave this week! Once we return, we will pack up and move on out to start our new adventure. I’m sure people think we are crazy, others have said they are envious, and others just wish us well. We might be a little crazy, but we are okay with that. We don’t know how long we will be out there or if we will even like it. All we know is that we are ready to do something drastically different for a little while. We plan to keep the blog as current as possible and hope you’ll stop in from time to time and see where the wind has blown us.
